Fundamentals & All Levels:
Your development has stages, and you must learn where one ends and the next begins.
What is fixed:
With fundamentals, specificity is non-negotiable. These core movements let you create space, survive pressure, recover guard, and escape; they are essential skills and, as such, must be held to the highest standards of technical execution.
Everyone needs them. It doesn’t matter whether you are 20 or 50, light or heavy, supple or stiff, white belt or black belt. Without them, you might have the most creative game in the room, yet still be flattened by someone with stronger foundations.
Any deficiency in your fundamentals will leave a gape that will appear under pressure, and that is why we limit individual initiative and creative expression at the fundamental level. No exceptions.
What is left open:
At the advanced level, the rule shifts completely. Once your fundamentals are solid, we do not tell you what kind of jiu-jitsu to play. Some individuals are aggressive. Others take wild risks and pursue the finish. Some are reflective, patient, and grinding, winning by solving the puzzle. Bodies vary; short or tall, heavy or light, and each temperament suggests a different game; forcing everyone into one mold would be a mistake. Our role is not to create copies of ourselves. Instead, we aim to give each student a foundation strong enough to support whatever game they wish to build.
The line:
Basics are tightly constrained; advanced expression is open-world.
Think of it as the fundamentals belonging to the art, while the advanced game belongs to the individual, and those who are lax about the first create fragility in their game, while those who are rigid about the second produce a predictable one.
Hold the line at the right point, and you gain both: technically sound and unmistakably yourself.
